4PLANET IMPACT / ISSUE
Weakened natural carbon sinks
Forests, soils, peatlands and oceans absorb and store carbon, but land-use change and climate feedbacks can weaken those functions.
Why it matters
Carbon storage is dynamic and varies by ecosystem, management, disturbance and time.
What the sources establish
IPCC AR6 assesses land and ocean carbon sinks as central components of the global carbon cycle and shows that their behaviour changes with emissions and climate.

Published action
No project on this issue has passed the IMPACT publication gate yet. That is not evidence that no work exists.
Known and not established
- Avoided emissions, removals and stored carbon must not be double-counted, and restoration does not guarantee permanent storage.
- This issue record is source-grounded context, not proof that any particular project, action or intervention is effective.
