Methane emissions
Methane is emitted from energy, agriculture and waste systems and contributes strongly to near-term warming.
Why it matters
Detecting methane is not the same as demonstrating that an emission has been stopped; measurement, mitigation and verified reduction remain separate states.
What the sources establish
UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory addresses methane emissions across major emitting sectors using measurement and data to support mitigation.

Published action
No project on this issue has passed the IMPACT publication gate yet. That is not evidence that no work exists.
Known and not established
- Detection of a methane source is not evidence of a measured emissions reduction.
- This issue record is source-grounded context, not proof that any particular project, action or intervention is effective.
