Deforestation
Conversion and loss of natural forest can reduce habitat, biodiversity and carbon stocks.
Why it matters
Forest loss changes living systems and carbon storage, but forest-cover loss is not automatically the same thing as deforestation.
What the sources establish
Deforestation is a distinct form of forest loss, and changes in forest extent and condition need to be interpreted with their drivers and forest type.
