What do the initials WWF stand for?

Back in 1961 when it was founded, WWF stood for the "World Wildlife Fund". However, as the organization grew over the 70s and into the 80s, WWF began to expand its work to conserve the environment as a whole (reflecting the interdependence of all living things), rather than focusing on selected species in isolation. So although we continued to use our well-known initials, our legal name became "WWF-World Wide Fund For Nature" (formerly World Wildlife Fund - except in North America where the old name was retained).

More and more, however, to avoid confusion and mixed messages across borders and languages, WWF is known as simply "WWF, the global conservation organization."

History

In almost 5 decades, WWF (formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund) has become one of the world's largest and most respected independent conservation organizations.
With almost 5 million supporters distributed throughout 5 continents, WWF has offices in over 90 countries and can safely claim to have played a major role in the evolution of the international conservation movement.

Since 1985, WWF has invested over US$1 billion in more than 12,000 projects .

All these projects and activities play a part in the campaign to stop the accelerating degradation of Earth's natural environment, and to help its human inhabitants live in greater harmony with nature.

What does WWF do?

The Earth is at a critical point where the decisions and actions taken by one species - ours - will determine the future of all life.

In order to survive and prosper, we must urgently change our course. We must ensure a healthy planet where people and nature thrive in a stable environment, now and for generations to come.

The only way to ensure this is to preserve biodiversity, the places they live, and reduce humanity’s impact - our footprint - on their natural habitats. This work must start right now.
